Depending on the content, the device on which it is running will send commands up to 25 times a second to the new streaming interface on the Philips Hue V2 bridge. Is Philips Hue Entertainment software ZigBee-standardized?

No, this is a specific, manufactured extension we have added next to ZigBee. It will work in parallel with standard ZigBee to offer the fast, synchronous experience necessary for Philips.

ZigBee is perfectly suited for scene setting and home automation, where multiple lights are infrequently and reliably set to a new setting. ZigBee has limitations if we want to push updates to multiple lights at high frequency; only a certain number of messages can be handled by the network. Our new streaming commands bundle updates for multiple lights in a single inter pan message to overcome this limitation.

We still believe ZigBee is the best protocol for scene setting and home automation. The new streaming command will work in parallel to enable entertainment use cases.

Philips Hue API makes use of HTTP, which guarantees delivery but not timing. For streaming use cases, timing is critical for synchronization. We want to drop messages, which cannot be executed in time. The UDP and DTLS protocol used in HTTP has this behavior, and is ideally suited for secure, highly synchronized, streaming use cases.
