How to Setup

The new Amazon Echo PLUS is bundled with a Philips Hue white bulb, which is incredibly simple to set up: just plug it in and screw the Philips Hue white bulb. The bulb will be automatically detected once you ask “Alexa, discover devices,” and you’re ready to go. Turn your lights on and off, dim up or down to create the right light setting at any time of day: just ask Alexa.

Functionality

Amazon Echo PLUS works straight out of the box and no additional hardware is needed for basic functionality. However, to unlock limitless possibilities beyond voice control, you can upgrade with the Philips Hue bridge or starter kits for full access to the powerful Philips Hue system.

Voice Commands

You can say: “Alexa, turn my lights to [COLOR] in the [ROOM]?” Please note that you need to have at least one “Philips Hue white and color ambiance” light and you have to mention the room or light with the name you’ve setup it in the Philips Hue App or Amazon Alexa App. Examples:

  • say “Alexa, Turn my lights to < Specific color >”, e.g. “Alexa, turn my lights to red” or say “Alexa, Set my lights to < Specific color >”, e.g. “Alexa, set my lights to red” Set <Name of light> to < Specific color>, e.g. “Alexa, turn corner light to blue”
  • say “Alexa, Turn my lights to < Color temperature >”, e.g. “Alexa, turn my lights to warm white”
  • say “Alexa, turn <Room name> to < Specific color> ”, e.g. “Alexa, turn Living Room to green”

    You can also do some relative changes in color temperature of the lights (warmer, colder):

Can you ask Alexa to activate routines like “wake up routine” or “go to sleep routine”?

The full functionality is only available with the Philips Hue bridge: a natural wake up that simulates the rising of the sun in your bedroom. You will also need Philips Hue white ambiance or Philips Hue white and color ambiance bulbs. It also requires the app to set these routines. You are able to use Alexa for this feature but the lights will turn on and off instantly, rather than over a period of time.

Philips Hue works with Amazon Alexa, Apple’s Siri and Google Home. With the Philips Hue bridge you can connect to all of them – using whichever is your favorite to control your Philips Hue lights.

Can I design third party apps specifically with this integration in mind? Is there a separate API?

There is no separate API. You can control the Philips Hue lights via the Philips Hue API. You can control Amazon Alexa via the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK).

I already have a Dot + Philips Hue starter kit (or bulb). Can I use Amazon Echo PLUS as well and will I have any problems?

No, you can simply add Echo PLUS to your current set up.
