Aurora is a Zigbee 3.0-certified product designed to work with other Zigbee 3.0- certified lights. It’s certified to work with Philips Hue smart bulbs and fixtures and is a part of the Friends of Hue program.

Aurora doesn’t require a bridge or hub. You can pair it directly to up to 12 Zigbee smart bulbs. However, to take advantage of smart features such as scenes and scheduling, we recommend connecting Aurora through a Philips Hue bridge.

Each Aurora dimmer can control up to 12 smart bulbs. (Up to 50 when commissioned to the Hue Bridge).

How to add aurora to the bridge and Hue system?

In the app go to settings > accessory setup > Add accessory > Friends of Hue switch > Lutron Aurora switch > double click button > LED slowly pulsing

  • Change the name

You can always do this later by going to accessory set and click on the aurora switch.

What to do when the app can’t find aurora?

  1. Make sure a light on aurora is flashing when the button is pressed. If there is no light it’s not powered, please place a (new) battery.
  2. When aurora is powered, reset it (in-app instructions are in place) by quickly pressing the button 3 times and then hold on the button. When light on aurora is flashing fast, press again 3 times the button. Hereafter try to pair aurora again to the bridge and the hue system.
  3. If the app stays on the “Add switch” screen (the one that shows a big picture of the round aurora switch), use the back button in the upper left corner. Check if the new rotary is listed in the next screen. If so, tap on this list entry to assign a room to it.

Can the aurora control more than one room in the Hue system?

No, one room is max. However, in the Hue app, you can assign as many lights to this “room”, no matter where there are situated in your home.

What type of battery is required?

Aurora uses a standard CR2032 coin cell battery (Not similar to the Hue Dimmer Switch).

How long does the Aurora battery last?

Battery life is expected to be 4 years plus but will vary based on usage.

In a three-way switch application, can I use two different Aurora dimmers to control one light bulb or a set of bulbs?

Yes. You can program multiple Aurora dimmers to control the same light sources.

Will Aurora fit over any toggle switch?

We tested the mounting base on a wide variety of toggle switch and wall plate combinations to ensure that it would accommodate variations in switch height and width.

Is there a way to mount Aurora onto paddle style switches?

No, at this time Aurora only mounts over toggle style switches.

Does Aurora work with Caséta or RA2 Select (Lutron systems)?

No. Aurora communicates on the Zigbee wireless protocol; Caséta and RA2 Select operate via Lutron’s Clear Connect RF technology.

Is Aurora compatible with other smart home systems besides Philips Hue?

Currently, Aurora only integrates with Philips Hue.

Yes, it dims the intensity of a Philips Hue bulb of any color, but you’ll need to change the color through the Hue app.  

Does Aurora work with Apple Homekit (when combined with a Hue Bridge)?

No, Aurora does not work with Homekit (as Homekit lacks support for Rotary devices.)

Can Aurora be mounted by other means, such as magnets?

Currently Aurora can only be mounted to a toggle switch.  Use of magnets can affect the reliability of the rotary functionality, and should not be used for mounting Aurora. 

How long does it take for a Aurora to join a Hue bridge?

The Aurora device should join the Hue bridge in <20 seconds.  It can take up to 2 minutes depending on the amount of network traffic and if you are far away from the bridge.  Try moving closer to the bridge when adding the Aurora to your system. 

Why do I see a Red LED when I use the Aurora device?

The Aurora device uses the Red LED to indicate that the unit has a low battery, and the battery should be replaced to ensure continued operation.
